CHILDREN have been banned from making daisy chains and playing with yo-yos because school bosses say the games are too dangerous. Handstands, tag and climbing frames have also been halted in case they hurt themselves, warned the Children’s Society which described the edicts as “ludicrous”. A London primary outlawed daisy chains in case kids picked up germs. Some parks and playgrounds even prevented kids from playing in bushes in case they got “too dirty”. Researchers from the society quizzed more than 500 children who said that playgrounds had become too boring. Half had been stopped from playing with water, a third were told not to climb trees in parks and playgrounds and a quarter were banned from riding skateboards or climbing frames. Tim Gill, director of the Children’s Play Council said: “Trying to guarantee absolute safety is not doing the best for kids. The real world is not risk-free.” The Sun 29/7/02.
