Police hazard lights

SCROOGE police chiefs in the North East have banned Christmas lights from police stations, claiming they are too dangerous. Durham Constabulary bosses sent out a force-wide memo telling officers not to put up the decorations because they were a risk to staff and the public. Steve Smith, chairman of the Durham Police Federation, said: “I think it's a bit ‘Bah, humbug!’ myself. I think it’s over the top.” But a Durham Police spokesman said the decision was made to protect officers and the public from possible faulty lights. A memo was circulated to all officers and station staff in the Durham area by the force's director of finance, Patrick Melia. It told force members that after a meeting of senior staff there was to be a blanket ban on electrical decorations, due to the fire risk. Bosses say the ban is not down to the force refusing to spend money safety-testing the lights, but because of not knowing where lights would be put up and which ones were safe.
