Church kites grounded

ROSSENDALE council has grounded a fundraising kite contest organised by a local curch. The event was to be held to mark the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan where kite flying had also been banned. The council said accident and damage insurance documents had not been completed. As the church was planning to charge an entry fee and the event was to be staged on council land, they could not grant permission. The Rev. Ron Phillips of Sion Baptist Church, who organized the event, said: “We could not help but make the comparison to what the Taliban did and this. It seems surprising that you need permission for something as simple and harmless as kite-flying. It was disappointing, but I understand the concerns of Rossendale Council.” Owen Williams, the council’s chief executive, said: “Any event which charges people to participate has to be covered by public liability insurance. It does not matter what activity is taking place. Public liability is even needed for bouncy castles.” Manchester Evening News 14/10/04.
