Put out no flags

FLYING flags from the MPs’ office building near the House of Commons has been banned - because it’s too dangerous. Health and safety experts say it is unsafe for workers to put up flags on the flagpole at Portcullis House. Flag raisers have to climb over ventilation ducts in poor light, all without a safety harness. It means a flag has been flown only once since the problem-plagued building for MPs and their staffs opened in 2000. Labour MP John Spellar said: “This is a case of bungling bureaucrats and architects not thinking things through.” Sunday Mirror 28/1/07.
