Guard sacked for stopping suicide

A COURAGEOUS hospital security guard has been sacked - for dramatically saving a patient from a suicide leap. Dad-of-three Baid Tamoor, 34, climbed 15ft up scaffolding as the man prepared to jump off after tying a noose around his neck. Without thought for his own safety, hero Baid grappled with the mentally-ill patient and restrained him with the help of a paramedic. But instead of praising the guard, bosses fired him for breaking health and safety rules. Shocked Baid, who worked at Lewisham Hospital, South London, said: “I can't believe it. Why should I leave my job for saving someone’s life?” After the scaffolding rescue, Baid, of Kidbrooke, South London, was given a dressing down and suspended from work. He was then sacked by his employers, First Management Group. In a statement with Lewisham Hospital (right), the security firm said Baid’s actions were “a serious breach of health and safety regulations”. A spokesman for First Management added: “It may seem harsh and unfair. But our guards are employed to monitor security and report incidents to the police or fire service and not to risk their own safety.” Suicide Reference Library 2/07.
