Topple test turnround

A CASH-strapped council has agreed to stump up the money to fix headstones flattened during ‘topple tests’ after furious protests from campaigners. Gosport councillors have confirmed they will find up to £100,000 to repair the graves after carrying out the controversial safety tests on memorials at the town’s Ann’s Hill Cemetery. It is welcome news for angry relatives who objected after seeing cherished gravestones toppled and then were told they had to pay for repairs. The bills sparked a political row. Council bosses had hoped the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) would foot the bill, claiming the tests – designed to prevent anyone being injured from collapsing gravestones – were carried out on HSE advice.
