Conker allergy nutty

PUPILS at two schools have been banned from playing conkers in case they suffer from a nut allergy. The headteachers feared children would suffer a nasty reaction just by touching them. But experts said the latest in a string of scares about kids playing conkers was simply bonkers. Headteacher Gary Postlethwaite acted after a number of parents of kids at Bookwell Primary School in Egremont, Cumbria, said they were worried about the danger. “We have some children in school with severe nut allergies and children have been told not to bring conkers in.” But Sue Higgs, spokeswoman for the Anaphylaxis Campaign which helps people with allergies, said: “This seems an over-reaction. In all of our years of experience we have never come across anyone who has had a severe reaction to a conker.” The Sun 7/10/04.
