Police rapped over wrists

A POLICE force has banned officers from wearing charity wristbands - for health and safety reasons. Bobbies are bemused by the ban because they regularly wear watches, copper rheumatism bracelets and remembrance poppies on duty. Supt Peter Nicholson confirmed all officers had been “reminded” that the West Yorkshire police dress code strongly deters them from sporting the wristbands. Millions of people wear the colourful bands to support campaigns such the fight on racism and bullying. Even Tony Blair wore one to help combat poverty in Africa. Michael Downes, of the West Yorkshire Police Federation, said: “If a manager was concerned for officers’ safety, we would support that. But if it was because they don’t like these bands, we would be opposed to that.” Daily Mirror 13/6/05.
