Building cover-up

THE government will decide whether or not UK builders will be banned from working bare-chested after MEPs voted to pass the buck. The European Commission’s controversial Optical Radiation Directive was designed to protect workers exposed to X-rays or welding equipment. But an attempt to extend the EU legislation to cover “natural” radiation - sunlight - was watered down after claims that Britain’s construction workerswould be forced to cover up at work. Conservative MEP Philip Bushill-Matthews said the tan-ban idea was “barmy”, adding: “This raised the prospect of fully clothed lifeguards in open-air swimming pools.” The Sun 7/9/05.
