End of the line for spotters

HORDES of angry train spotters are letting off steam over news that their number could soon be up. Security and safety issues have led to fears that rail companies will ban the UK’s 100,000 spotters from stations. A report in Railway Magazine highlighted a number of worrying platform problems. One man was told to leave Britain’s biggest interchange, Clapham Junction in South London, because he was “breaching security”. Railway Magazine editor Nick Pigott said: “The authorities are picking on a harmless hobby that has never caused a problem. It is a total breach of civil liberties.” Colin Smith, 52, from Bermondsey, South East London, said: “Sod ’em all. I’ve been doing this since I was six and nobody’s going to stop me.” The Sun 30/5/03.
