Doubt over dung catcher

BLACKPOOL’S landau horses will not be wearing nappies in time for the start of this holiday season. The future of the dung-catching devices has been thrown into doubt after councillors were told they could pose a serious health and safety threat. David Muir, equine consultant to the RSPCA told a council meeting: “What if the horse panics, puts its leg back, gets caught in the device and three people end up dead? We have to do a lot more research into the pros and cons of these devices before we put them on horses.” The delay in making horses wear nappies has come as a blow to Town Hall bosses, who hoped their introduction would put an end to the smelly problem of horse muck on the Promenade. Horse vet Barry Johnson said: “Any piece of equipment added to a horse carries extra risks and the nappy is no exception.” If the nappies are deemed too dangerous to wear, the future of the traditional Blackpool landau will be thrown into doubt.
