Ball breaker
THE LUNCHTIME kick-about, a feature of school life for generations, has been banned in a school because
pupils might get hurt. In a new surrender to health and safety laws, impromptu matches at Burnham Grammar School, Bucks, have been stopped to prevent people being hit by stray balls. Cathy Long, the head teacher, banned the games after a teacher was struck while crossing the playground. She said: “A member of staff accidentally had a football kicked in her face and we have had a few kids having to see matron because they have been whacked with a football.” But Tam Fry from the National Obesity Forum said: “This is absolutely bananas. In a day and age when children are not getting enough exercise as it is, it seems absolutely ludicrous to effectively tell children they cannot run about during lunch breaks. What are they supposed to do? Sit around and get fat?” Daily Telegraph 27/1/07.
