FOR MORE than
a century Stanhope Town Band has marched through the town’s main street each year to herald the start of Stanhope Show. But police have cancelled the latest parade on safety grounds, saying they hadn’t been informed it would happen. Now furious musicians and politicians have attacked Durham Police’s killjoy approach. Band leader and conductor Steve Robson said: “It was very disappointing. I believe strongly in tradition. For as long as anyone can remember a band has marched through the town and then walked across the stepping stones before marching into the showfield.” But Sgt Jon Curtis of Crook Police insisted the long arm of the law were not killjoys, saying: “For Health and Safety and litigation purposes we had to turn the request down on this occasion. There was simply insufficient time to plan the march and close the road.” The Journal, Newcastle, 18/9/02.
