Bear cheek

TRADING Standards officers have seized two teddy bears from a haberdashery because they do not conform to European Union standards. An assistant in the shop made the teddy bears for sale using scraps of material but officials demanded that a full account of the materials and manufacture be written up and kept for six years. Trading Standards said that although they were safe they did not have the CE label on them so they could not be sold. This mark exists merely to show the goods are for sale in the EU and is not a safety mark. Daily Mail 8 /4/99.
