Head for heights
A EUROPEAN Union
directive designed to promote safety on building sites must now be applied to rock climbers. Under the new rules, mountaineers may well endanger their lives by being obliged to fix two separate ropes to rock faces instead of the traditional one. The Heath & Safety Executive says it will also be necessary to fix safety notices on mountains to warn climbers when they are approaching icy or snow-covered surfaces. The move is said to have dismayed Britain’s leading climbing and mountaineering organizations. Daily Telegraph 17/8/03.
