Lottery hazard

A CHARITY group has hit out at a ban on its fund-raising at a hospital - because its standing lottery display and mobile ticket trolley have been ruled potential fire hazards. The League of Friends of Warrington Hospital has raised about £1m over 15 years. Friends’ chairman Alan Woodward described the ban as “a bombshell”. He said: “The ban is nothing to do with the hospital. It is the fire brigade who have come in and told us our activities constitute a hazard.” He added a number of other charities had been affected by the ban, including Macmillan Nurses and the British Heart Foundation. A spokesman for Cheshire Fire Brigade said: “One of our fire safety officers visited the hospital and inquired if the lottery stand, which has bright lights shining down on it, had been the subject of a risk assessment. We were told it had not.” Manchester Evening News 25/5/04.
