Off the skids

KIDS have been banned from making ice slides in the playground over fears that parents might sue schools. Janitors have been told to pour salt or sawdust on slippery patches in case anyone gets hurt. But education authorities have been accused of “wrapping children in cotton wool”. Council bosses in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, East Lothian, Angus and North Ayrshire have imposed an outright ban on what they call “slip hazards” in schools. A spokes man for Edinburgh City Council said: “Teachers will undertake a risk assessment of the playground to ensure children can play safely, which would mean gritting areas susceptible to icing over.” The Daily Record 23/1/07.
