Fizzle fighters
A TRADITIONAL
bonfire built by firefighters and situated next to a fire station has been scrapped because it could breach health and safety regulations. The Guy Fawkes Night celebration in Coleshill, Warwickshire, fell foul of new legislation that requires public bonfires to be cordoned off and monitored 24 hours a day. The axe has fallen on the November 6 event because Coleshill fire station, on Park Road, is only open during the day and could not provide the security needed to ensure the bonfire was not tampered with. Local firefighter and town mayor Norman Henderson described the decision as “legislation gone mad”. Tamworth Herald 25/10/04.
