Heel rage

YEOVIL Town Council has changed its bye-laws on public safety and nuisance grounds to outlaw anything that has wheels and can be attached to the feet. The bye-law ban captures the new craze of Heelys as well as skateboards, roller skates and roller blades. Youngsters caught using Heelys in the town centre face being arrested by the police and prosecuted with a maximum potential fine of £500. In theory, the law means a girl of 12 using her Heelys while out shopping with her parents could be arrested, fined and left with a criminal record. Yeovil has a particular problem with youths skateboarding and roller-blading because it is built on a hill and provides ideal conditions. Councillor Tony Fife said: “I think it is also necessary to keep Heelys out of the town. If you get someone aged 14 or 15, who is six feet tall, going 20 miles an hour through the streets in their Heeleys, that could cause an awful lot of damage.” Yeovil Town News 7/2/07.
