Killer cake scare

A SCHOOL has banned the sale of home-made cakes at its summer fete in case it is sued over food poisoning. The rule even applies to children bringing in birthday cake from home to share. Parents at Crudwell C of E Primary School in Wiltshire were stunned to be told in a newsletter that kids’ favourites like fairy cakes and Victoria sponges are no longer acceptable. Headteacher Lisa Tudor said the rule even applied to children bringing in birthday cake. She said the decision only to accept shop-bought products was made after taking advice from the County Council and was backed by school governors. “I’m sure many of you will join the school staff in the disappointment that this causes but I trust you understand we are obliged to follow health and safety procedures,” she wrote. But Conservative County Councillor for Malmesbury John Thompson said: “It’s preposterous. The world is full of people at the moment blowing each other up and we’re worried about killer cream cakes.” Western Mail 5/6/04.
