Poppy cock-up
COUNCILLORS have vowed to fight a health and safety ban on a poppy shower at a Remembrance
Day service that has been taking place for decades. Fire inspectors told Sandwell Council they could not include the shower in the November 14 service at West Bromwich Town Hall because it could constitute a hazard. The paper poppy shower, part of an annual service attended by war veterans, has been part of West Bromwich Town Hall’s Remembrance celebrations since before the Second World War. But Keith Davies of the council said: "Even if it means I’ve got to do it myself and take a fire extinguisher, I’m determined it’s going to go ahead. Poppies will be falling on November 14. It seems very strange that we have been doing this for the past 60-odd years and all of a sudden, it’s a health and safety issue.” The Sun 26/10/04.
